A story written for a White Eagle Family Service for Advent 2015 by Kathryn Bingham
Journey

It began with a strange feeling in his heart.
He’d never experienced anything quite like this before. It was as if his heart was growing bigger and bigger. There were strange flutterings deep inside... and then a feeling of space - it was as if his body couldn’t hold the powerful force that was suddenly inside him.

Fahed struck his hands to his heart, unsure of what to do and what to think. What was happening? He looked around at his brothers who sat with him around the fire, as they watched over their flock of sheep in the cold Judean night. Had they felt something too?
He shot up restlessly, feeling the need to do something... but he didn’t know what. There was a wonderful and yet terrible ache inside him. It suddenly made him feel that he was only half alive, that something huge was missing from his life. But what was it?
His brothers looked at him in surprise as he paced around the fire with a rather wild look in his eyes. He looked as if he had just sat on a wasps nest!
‘Uh Uh!’ they laughed –‘he’s having a funny turn and it’s not even the time of the full moon!
‘No! No! ‘Fahed cried, ‘Something’s happening, I can feel it – something huge and amazing but..... I don’t know what it is!’
They first began to laugh, but there was something in Fahed’s voice that made them sit up and look at him, and then at each other, with some uncertainty.
‘Can’t you feel it too?’ Fahed urged – and in that very moment they did begin to feel something! It seemed as if the very air around them began to change, to shimmer and to hum. They felt lighter, almost as if they were about to float up into the air. The darkness of the night sky began to change, to glow brighter and brighter, until they were so dazzled by the mysterious radiance around them that they had to shield their eyes.
For a moment they were all very frightened , and yet at the same time the air around them was filled with a sense of Love, such as they’d never felt before.
As they shaded their eyes from the intense Light, a voice in each of their hearts urged them not to be afraid. Something truly wonderful was happening and they were invited to go and see it for themselves.
‘Follow the Star!’ The voice in their hearts said, ‘Follow the Star! ....Follow the Star...’
And suddenly it was all over. And they were all sitting bewildered by the fire, staring at each other open-mouthed.
It was Fahed who stirred first.’ Follow the Star?’ He said quietly, ‘Follow the star....’ and there was the Star. A bright star moving slowly up in the heavens just ahead of them, heading towards their home town of Bethlehem.
With no words spoken aloud, they gathered up the youngest of the lambs in their arms and without questioning, herded their surprised sheep out into the night.

The shepherds remembered little about their journey, only recalling that there was no doubt about where they were headed.
As they had approached the stable at the back of an inn, they had sensed again that overwhelming feeling of Love, and they knew they had reached their journey’s end.
Once again the Light was so strong that it had taken them some time to see the scene before their eyes. …………A young couple , the mother with a new born babe cradled protectively in her arms, with such Light, such Love, around them, stronger than they would ever have thought possible.
Speechless with wonder, the young shepherds were once more aware of a voice in their hearts
The Light has come. The Light is here. - Thank you for listening to your heart and for coming to welcome me. Thank you for following the guidance of your heart. I will now be with you always, always.....Just follow the voice in your heart....
They felt that their hearts might burst with the feelings inside them. Never before had they felt so loved; never before had they felt such love for anything or anybody. No words could ever express how they felt that night.
They offered their young lambs as gifts for the new born baby and his parents and with great reluctance turned away to leave them to rest.
